Abstract
The Learning Process of Exchange Students Integration or Isolation
The project endeavors to investigate the integration of exchange students in the learning process, focusing on three dimensions: 1) interaction with students other exchange students and local student; 2) participation in the course; 3) utilization of learning tools and materials. The project was conducted in a MA selective course “Family sociology for a changing society”, where there were 40 students (11MA local KU students + 29 exchange students). A survey and 3 group interviews (with local KU students, exchange students, and teachers) were carried out. I found that there are several gaps in the learning process of exchange students. Regarding the utilization of learning tool, there is lack of instructions on how to use Absalon and library service for them. Regarding the student interaction, exchange students have very little interaction with local KU students. Regarding the participation in the course, they have seldom participated in the class discussion; besides, exchange students and local student have different impression of the group work in class, where the latter gave a lower rating. Regarding the level of knowledge and assessment, there are some challenges for them to achieve the goals of a MA selective course. Though such gaps could partly be related with their motivation for exchange, there is still some action that can be taken to improve their learning process. More group activities and instruction on the learning tool by the teacher could be provided. Course descriptions can be clearer about the level of knowledge required. More English course at BA level should be provided.
